©2013 UpToDate ® Print Email Treatment of hereditary hemochromatosis One phlebotomy (500 mL) once every one or two weeks Check hematocrit (Hct) prior to each phlebotomy; do not allow Hct to fall by more than 20 percent of prior level Check serum ferritin every 10 to 12 phlebotomies Stop frequent phlebotomy when ferritin reaches 50 to 100 microg/L Continue phlebotomies at intervals to keep ferritin between 50 and 100 microg/L Avoid vitamin C and iron supplements; dietary adjustments are unnecessary Excerpted from: Bacon BR, et al.
