Lipofuscin (often called "wear and tear pigment") is composed of lipid-containing residues of lysosomal digestion. Its presence in high concentration in macrophages suggests extensive liver cell necrosis. The blue structures are all that remains of sinusoidal membranes that normally surround the hepatic plates.
