©2013 UpToDate ® Print Email Mini-Mental State Examination norms by age, gender, and education level Fifth percentile norms for the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) were determined using a random population sample that incorporated the effects of age, gender, and education level, all factors that are felt to affect scores on the exam. In screening for dementia, the norms had a sensitivity and specificity of 85 and 89 percent, respectively.
