©2013 UpToDate ® Print Email Moderate alcohol intake reduces mortality In a middle-aged and elderly population study of 490,000 subjects, all-cause mortality and cardiovascular mortality were reduced with moderate alcohol consumption. However, mortality increased with intake greater than two drinks per day due to death from alcohol-related conditions and cancer. Data from Thun MJ, Peto R, Lopez AD, et al.
