©2013 UpToDate ® Print Email Light alcohol consumption reduces the risk of stroke The relationship between stroke of various etiologies and alcohol consumption was evaluated in 26,556 male cigarette smokers; relative risks were adjusted for age, body mass index, serum total cholesterol, number of cigarettes smoked daily, history of diabetes, history of heart disease, education, leisure-time activity, and supplementation with an antioxidant. Systolic blood pressure (SBP) and HDL cholesterol (HDLC) were added separately. Light alcohol intake reduced the risk of a stroke, while moderate and heavy consumption increased the risk.
