©2013 UpToDate ® Print Email Benefit of alendronate in glucocorticoid-treated patients Effect of alendronate (5 or 10 mg/day) or placebo on bone mineral density in 477 patients receiving an average daily dose of at least 7.5 mg of prednisone per day or its equivalent. The mean bone mineral density of the lumbar spine increased by 2.1 and 2.9 percent over 48 weeks in the patients receiving 5 and 10 mg of alendronate daily, respectively, while decreasing 0.4 percent in the placebo group (top left panel). Femoral neck, trochanter, and total body bone mineral density also increased significantly in the alendronate groups. Data from Saag, KG, Emkey, R, Schnitzer, TJ, et al, N Engl J Med 1998; 339:292.
