The separation of hemoglobins into their component globin chains and heme, which is eluted earlier, is achieved by the chemical composition of the buffer used in this technique, namely 0.1 M trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) and acetonitrile. HPLC: high performance liquid chromatography.
