The second panel shows a segment of umbilical cord (color coded in blue). The directionality of blood flow of the hepatic veins can be assessed in a transverse view of the upper abdomen as seen in the third panel. Red indicates blood flow towards the transducer while blue indicates flow in the opposite direction. The inferior vena cava is best imaged in a coronal plane above the renal vein and below the infundibulum. All precordial veins show the typical triphasic waveform pattern, although the relationship of forward and reverse velocities varies according to the pressure difference to the right atrium.
