©2013 UpToDate ® Print Email Arcades and vasa recta of the small intestines The superior mesenteric artery gives rise to the arcuate system that supplies the vasa recta of the small intestine. The arcades are simple and primary in the upper jejunum but increase in complexity in the more distal portions of the intestine. The vasa recta arise from the most peripheral arcades, and do not intercommunicate.
