When a nerve impulse arrives in the presynaptic axon terminal, neurotransmitter molecules are released from synaptic vesicles into the synaptic cleft. Neurotransmitter then binds to specific receptor proteins, causing the generation of electrical or chemical signals in the postsynaptic cell.
