©2013 UpToDate ® Print Email Balloon brachytherapy For intracavitary brachytherapy a radiation delivery device is placed into the partial mastectomy site either at the time of lumpectomy or several days later. High dose radioactive seeds are inserted into the device for a short period of time twice a day for five days. When treatment is completed, the device is removed. Single lumen and multi-lumen balloon catheter and non-balloon devices have all been used successfully.
