©2013 UpToDate ® Print Email Benefit from carotid endarterectomy is related to sex, age, and degree of stenosis In the European Carotid Surgery trial of 3024 patients, the benefit from carotid endarterectomy varied with sex, age, and degree of carotid stenosis. Men derived more benefit from surgery than women and there was more benefit with increasing severity of stenosis. Younger patients showed definite benefit from surgery over a narrowed range of severe stenosis than did older patients.
