Heme ring-opening at the alpha-carbon bridge of heme is catalyzed by heme oxygenase, resulting in the formation of biliverdin. This is followed by reduction of biliverdin to bilirubin in a reaction catalyzed by biliverdin reductase. NADH: reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide; NADPH: reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate.
