©2013 UpToDate ® Print Email Biventricular pacemaker A biventricular (or "BiV") pacemaker is a device that is used to treat some types of heart failure. The device uses electrical signals to help the heart pump better. The electrical signals travel from a battery to the heart through 3 wires (called "leads") that are put in different parts of the heart. The right atrial lead carries electrical signals to the right upper chamber (right atrium). The coronary sinus and right ventricular leads carry electrical signals to the heart's lower chambers (ventricles).
