©2013 UpToDate ® Print Email Methods to slow bone loss in postmenopausal women Effects of three interventions on distal forearm bone density in postmenopausal women with low baseline forearm bone density. Bone loss was significantly slowed or prevented with either exercise plus estrogen or exercise plus calcium supplementation. The former regimen was both more effective and associated with a higher incidence of side effects, such as breast tenderness and vaginal bleeding. Data from: Prince RL, Smith M, Dick IM, et al. Prevention of postmenopausal osteoporosis. A comparative study of exercise, calcium supplementation, and hormone-replacement therapy. N Engl J Med 1991; 325:1189.
