Outpatient therapy is usually appropriate. 2 Points: Moderate severity (risk of death 9 percent). Hospitalization should be considered. 3 to 5 Points: High severity (risk of death 15 to 40 percent). Hospitalization is indicated, and the patient should be assessed for possible intensive care unit admission, especially if the CURB-65 score is 4 or 5. * Defined as an Abbreviated Mental Test Score <=8 or new disorientation to person, place, or time. ** Urea is blood urea nitrogen [BUN], expressed in mg/dL or serum urea concentration, expressed in mmol/L.
