©2013 UpToDate ® Print Email Candesartan in prehypertension in TROPHY In the TROPHY trial, 806 patients with prehypertension (systolic BP 130-139 mmHg and/or diastolic BP 80-89 mmHg) were randomly assigned to candesartan or placebo for two years; all patients were then continued on placebo therapy for another two years. The systolic pressure was significantly reduced in the candesartan group during the two years of active therapy, but returned to placebo levels within nine months of cessation of candesaran. Although not shown, similar findings were noted with the diastolic pressure. Data from Julius, S, Nesbitt, SD, Egan, BM, et al, N Engl J Med 2006; 354:1685.
